Al Ahli won the Egyptian Super Cup for the 13th time in their history after beating the Pyramids 1-0 in a match that brought them together on Friday at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in the UAE capital Abu Dabi.

The match’s original time ended goalless, so both teams resorted to extra halves as Tunisian international defender Ali Maaloul scored the winning goal for Al Ahly from a penalty spot in the sixth minute of the first extra-half.

Al-Ahli, under the guidance of his Swiss coach Marcel Koller, retained the title he won last October at the expense of Zamalek.

Al Ahli were due to play in the Egyptian Super Cup this season against Zamalek but the white giant withdrew due to the presence of “favoritism” from the local federation against the team, after which the Egyptian federation decided to participate with the Pyramids.
