Apple’s Highly Anticipated Launch Event: What to Expect

Apple is set to hold its highly anticipated launch event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. The event, which is Apple’s most important of the year, is expected to showcase new hardware, including the much-awaited iPhone 15.

Apple will present a prerecorded video featuring its top executives to unveil the new products. The video will be streamed on YouTube and Apple’s website. Last year’s event lasted approximately one and a half hours, and since 2020, Apple has been using prerecorded videos for its product showcases.

These launches are crucial for Apple as they generate excitement for the products and set the stage for a marketing frenzy leading into the December quarter, which is the company’s biggest sales period. Last year, Apple’s YouTube video of the launch was viewed by 31 million people, indicating that customers prefer getting information directly from the company.

This year, Apple aims to revive its sales and fend off competition from Huawei while also enticing Android phone users to switch to iPhones.

In June, Apple announced its upcoming VR headset, the Vision Pro, which is scheduled to launch in 2024. Although an update on its developer outreach efforts is expected, more details about the VR headset are likely to be disclosed next year.

As for Apple’s Macs and iPads, it is unlikely that new reveals will be made on Tuesday. Apple typically prefers to dedicate separate events to these product lines. Last year, new iPads were announced through a press release.

This year’s launch invitations have the tagline “Wonderlust,” but it is important to note that the taglines do not necessarily provide a preview of the announcements. will be covering the launch live from Apple’s headquarters, and a live blog will also be available on .com.

At the previous year’s September event, Apple unveiled new iPhones, Apple Watches, and updated AirPods. Here’s what to expect from this year’s edition:

iPhone 15: USB-C and Titanium

Apple is anticipated to release four new iPhone models, following the pattern established since 2020. If Apple maintains its naming convention, this year’s models will fall under the iPhone 15 brand.

According to reports from Bloomberg News, TF International Securities hardware analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and Wall Street analysts, Apple is likely to launch two sizes of mid-range iPhones with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens, as well as two sizes of higher-end “Pro” phones featuring titanium casings and improved cameras.

The major change expected this year is the replacement of Apple’s proprietary Lightning port with a USB-C charging port. This change is driven by new European regulations that require a common charging port. Apple is likely to highlight the advantages for users, such as convenience and faster charging, while possibly giving the port a proprietary Apple marketing name.

Additionally, the higher-end Pro models might feature a titanium casing, which is lighter than the stainless steel used in previous models. The event invitations showcase an Apple logo in what appears to be a titanium finish.

The lower-end phones, expected to be called simply iPhone 15, could receive an upgrade with the “dynamic island” design, which replaces the notch by placing the facial recognition cameras at the top of the screen. Furthermore, the mute switch, a long-standing feature on iPhones, could gain new functions as a customizable “action button.”

Apple is also likely to emphasize camera and chip improvements as reasons to upgrade. According to Bloomberg, the larger Pro model might feature a new lens with twice the zoom strength compared to the iPhone 14 Pro’s 3x zoom lens.

Regarding pricing, it remains uncertain whether Apple will increase price points. While some analysts anticipate price hikes due to rising component costs, Apple did not raise U.S. iPhone prices last year under similar circumstances. However, Apple regularly adjusts prices worldwide after launches and in response to currency fluctuations.

Apple Watch and Accessories

Last year, Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 8 and a new high-end titanium model called the Ultra in September.

Both watches are likely to receive updates this year, although Apple watches typically undergo fewer major changes from year to year compared to iPhones. The mainstream Apple watches have maintained the same size and shape since 2018.

Analysts predict that Apple will upgrade the chip inside the new watches and update their health sensors. However, the company might save significant changes for the watch’s tenth anniversary next year.

Apple also offers various accessories that use Lightning connectors, such as certain AirPod models, Beats headphones, mice, and keyboards.

The AirPods Pro is expected to receive a new feature called Adaptive Audio, which does not require new hardware. Adaptive Audio uses machine learning and software to intelligently adjust volume and noise cancellation, allowing users to remain aware of their immediate surroundings.

It is likely that Apple will update its accessories to support USB-C, but these updates might not be discussed during the event or could be released at a later date.

iOS 17

Even for users who do not plan to purchase a new iPhone or Watch, Apple will provide new software for their devices. In June, Apple offered a preview of its latest operating systems, which will be released to users in September alongside the new iPhones.

Many of Apple’s noteworthy features do not require new hardware and will be available to all users with an iPhone released since 2018.

Here are some of the new features in iOS 17:

  • A revamped caller ID screen, known as “contact posters,” allowing users to choose the images displayed when calling other iPhone users.
  • Improved autocorrect using a transformer-based language model, the same technology used in applications like ChatGPT.
  • A Journal app that encourages users to record their thoughts and feelings daily. The app utilizes on-device machine learning to identify patterns without sending the data to a cloud server.
  • A standby dock mode that transforms the phone into a clock with widgets displaying alarms, appointments, and other dynamic information.
  • A business card replacement called NameDrop, enabling two iPhone users to exchange personal information by simply tapping their phones together.
  • Offline Apple Maps, allowing users to save extensive areas of roads and land for navigation even without cellular service.
