The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned consumers not to use public charging stations to charge their phones and tablets due to the possibility of their devices being hacked.

“Avoid using free charging stations at airports, hotels and malls,” the local FBI office in Denver said in a tweet. “Hackers have discovered ways to use public USB ports to inject malware and monitoring software into devices. Carry your own charger device and USB cable. and use a fork.” instead electrically.

The FBI has provided similar guidance on its website for avoiding public chargers, without citing any recent hacks.
