Moscow, May 21 – Cigarettes without nicotine will not help quit smoking, but they will complicate this process, Anton Masyakin, the chief Moscow psychiatrist and narcologist, told the News Agency.
He noted that in a stressful situation, this will lead to the fact that, with a high degree of probability, the place of a nicotine-free electronic cigarette will again be taken by a nicotine-containing product, since alternative strategies for behavior under stress are not formed at the usual level.
“The most effective and proven approach to the treatment of nicotine addiction is a combination of behavioral and pharmacological therapy. To reduce the manifestations of nicotine withdrawal, which manifests itself as nicotine cravings, anger or irritability, anxiety and depression, sleep problems, etc. … other treatment methods.”
At the same time, the agency’s interlocutor indicated that a person can start drinking more alcohol when quitting smoking, if there is a co-dependence on nicotine and alcohol. Smoking cessation can cause a compensatory desire to use alcohol as a “medicine” in order to “normalize” the condition. Therefore, when quitting smoking, it is also important to stop drinking alcohol.
