Tunisian Esperance has released a statement confirming that its player Hossam Dakduk took steroids against Sudanese Al-Merrikh in the first round of Group D competition in the African Champions League.

Esperance said in a statement it posted on its Facebook page: “The management of the club received an official letter from the African Football Confederation stating that the doping test carried out by Hossam Dakduk after the first round match against Al Merih from Sudan was positive.”

Al-Taraji defeated Al-Merich 1-0 in a match that brought them together in Tunisia on 11 February.

Dakduk is expected to be banned from any sporting activity for a long time, apart from financial punishment.

And Tunisian reports said that Esperance would be able to unilaterally terminate his contract with Dakduk without legal consequences if the player was found to be guilty and had taken illegal substances without the knowledge of Esperance’s doctor.
