Finnish President to Hear Erdogan’s Critical Messages at Bilateral Summit

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö expressed confidence that his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan has important messages at the bilateral meeting on Friday.

While visiting a prefab camp for earthquake victims in the Turkish state of Kahramanmaras, Solli Niinistö responded to a reporter’s question about President Erdogan’s announcement of Finland’s NATO membership by saying: “We will play our part and keep our promise.”

He added: “Tomorrow (Friday) we will have more information on this issue. I have known Erdogan for a long time and I am sure that he has important messages.”

And will Finland and Sweden join NATO separately, Niinistö commented: “We are not applying alone, but it seems that we can become a member of the alliance, because Finland has done everything that is required of it and has applied for NATO membership. and we have negotiated. “With the Turkish government in Madrid and I think we’ve done what’s necessary, now we’re waiting for approval.”

Last Wednesday, President Erdogan confirmed that Turkey will do what it undertakes regarding Finland’s membership in NATO and fulfill its obligations.

It should be noted that on June 28, 2022, Turkey, Sweden and Finland signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding regarding the accession of the latter two countries to NATO after they pledged to respond to Ankara’s demands for cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
