The Sri Lankan authorities are ready to issue free visas on arrival to foreign travelers in order to increase the flow of tourists, said the Minister of Tourism of Sri Lanka, Diana Gammaj.

“Some countries are smaller than Sri Lanka, but they are visited by more foreigners and their tourism income is higher. One of the secrets to their success is the free visa on arrival. It is high time for Sri Lanka to accept and implement this principle,” the minister said.

She pointed out that the increase in income from the growth of the tourist flow fully compensates for the income received by the budget from visa fees.

“It’s better to forget about the $60 traveler visa fee and attract travelers who spend about $1,000 a day, which is what many other countries are doing successfully,” the official added.

From December 1, 2022, foreigners pay a visa fee of US$60 to enter Sri Lanka.
