Human rights groups have issued a travel warning to Florida after state governor Ron DeSantis signed into law several bills to crack down on transgender activity.

The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, has released a breakdown of the risks involved in moving to or visiting Florida. The organization’s warning was issued as an update on advice from Equality Florida, also a civil rights group.

“Ron DeSantis continues to make Florida an unwanted and dangerous place for LGBTQ+ people,” the campaign said.

Equality Florida issued its warning after the governor signed the Don’t Talk Like Me Act into law. Since then, DeSantis has signed several anti-transgender bills, the latest of which bans male performers who are intoxicated by women from hosting so-called drag shows, as well as sponsoring gender affirmation for minors and restricting discussion of personal pronouns.

“Those who come should join us in speaking out against this dangerous policy,” said Kelly Robinson, president of the Campaign for Human Rights. “Those who choose another place to work, study or play should explain why they should not go to Florida.” .”

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) warned against travel to Florida, which has “become hostile to black Americans.”

The organization said it issued the warning in response to DeSantis’ aggressive attempts to erase black history and limit diversity, fairness and inclusion programs in the state’s schools.

The DeSantis administration in January blocked a high school course on African American studies. He also supported a measure to ban the teaching of “critical race theory” in public schools.
