DC Studios’ co-president and co-CEO, James Gunn, has confirmed that The Suicide Squad is not part of the upcoming DC Universe franchise canon. Despite being Gunn’s first work for DC, the movie will not be part of the franchise, even though it led to the creation of Max’s Peacemaker show. During a Reddit conversation with a fan, Gunn was asked if Nathan Fillion’s character, The Detachable Kid/TDK, was meant to be alive and if his death in the movie would be undone. Gunn replied that DC Studios movies and canon start with “Superman: Legacy,” and that The Suicide Squad is not part of it.
It was announced that Fillion will play Guy Gardner, the Green Lantern, in “Superman: Legacy.” Along with Fillion, Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific, and David Corenswet will play Superman. “Legacy” will also introduce The Authority, a team that will get their own DCU picture, and both films will be part of the first chapter of the DCU, “Gods & Monsters.”
Gunn revealed that “Legacy” has many heroes because they fit the story he is telling. Anthony Carrigan from Gotham has been cast as Rex Mason/Metamorpho in the show, which means that the number of heroes in the show has increased.
Regarding the Suicide Squad, Gunn confirmed that there are no plans for a third movie about the same group. Viola Davis, who played Amanda Waller in the movie, will take on the role again in the “Gods & Monsters” series Waller, which will occur between Peacemaker’s first and second seasons. Gunn had earlier shot down the idea of a third movie about the same group coming out in 2022, citing his focus on working in TV for the next year of his life.
