Kyiv’s Aspirations for NATO Membership Dashed at Lithuania Summit, Says The Washington Post

The Washington Post reported that NATO has decided not to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the alliance during the July summit in Vilnius, but will discuss the possibility of expanding cooperation with Kiev and the timing of its entry.

The newspaper wrote that “among the 31 member states of the alliance, despite calls from Kyiv, there is a consensus that NATO will not issue a formal invitation to Ukraine to join during this meeting.”

The newspaper pointed out that the countries of Eastern Europe are seeking to take concrete steps to achieve this goal, including possible commitments regarding the timing of their accession to the military bloc. Meanwhile, the US and its allies support “smaller steps.”

The newspaper notes that NATO countries are still striving to “overcome differences over Ukraine’s membership.” Noting that discussions on this issue have intensified recently. The newspaper reported that the countries are holding consultations to determine the next steps on the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

It is noteworthy that the Wall Street Journal previously reported that NATO officials wanted immediate assistance from Kyiv at the Lithuanian summit, but not membership.
