Newcastle are close to qualifying for the Champions League next season after beating hosts Brighton 4-1 on Thursday in a postponed Premier League matchday 25 fixture.
Newcastle pushed forward with a return goal from Germany’s Dennis Ondev in the 22nd minute before bolstering their lead with a header from their defender Dan Bourne (45+4), with Ondev closing the gap in the second half (51).
And as Brighton struggled to equalise, Newcastle put their hopes to rest by scoring two deadly goals within a minute thanks to Callum Wilson (89) and Brazil’s Bruno Guimarães (90+1).
And Newcastle increased their lead to 69 points in 36 games, third against Manchester United, fourth (66 out of 35 games) and fifth Liverpool, who have come back strongly in recent weeks (65 points in 36 games) ).
Brighton had an opportunity to challenge for a Champions League qualifying position, but their task has been made more difficult by the fact that they are stuck at 58 points in 35 games in sixth place and are looking to qualify for the second continental competition, the Europa League.
