The Everlasting Meme: Multiple Editions of Skyrim

The topic of multiple editions of Skyrim has taken the internet by storm and has become a permanent meme. It has gained so much traction that even Todd Howard, the renowned game director and producer, acknowledges it. In an email sent to Bethesda and Xbox staff to celebrate the early access launch of Starfield, a new science-fantasy role-playing game, Howard humorously referenced the various editions of Skyrim.

In a letter of congratulations, which was reported by Windows Central and summarized here, Howard discussed the arduous journey of developing Starfield, which included the release of several other games. He mentioned titles such as “Fallout 4, Skyrim SE, Fallout Shelter, Skyrim VR, Fallout 76, more Skyrim…”

According to the same letter, the development of Starfield was officially presented to the head of ZeniMax in 2013. Since then, Bethesda has released three distinct versions of Skyrim in the span of twenty years. Specifically, Howard referred to the special editions released in 2016, the VR version for PSVR and PC launched in 2017, and the Anniversary Edition, an expanded edition released in 2021. This brings the total number of “Skyrim” editions to four, including the original version. However, if we consider each platform separately, the count exceeds a dozen editions. Additionally, when we factor in the differentiation of PC versions based on stores, the number continues to grow.

While we eagerly await the release of our Starfield review today, fans can indulge in the online character creation tool or explore the wealth of details shared by Emil Pagliarulo, a prominent figure in the game’s development.
