British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley has turned down an invitation from his Argentinean counterpart, Santiago Cafiero, to negotiate the dependency of the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands, which Argentina tried to control by force 40 years ago.

“The Falkland Islands belong to Britain,” Cleverley tweeted on Thursday. “The islanders have the right to self-determination and they have decided that the islands should remain a British Overseas Territory.”

The dispute over the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic between Argentina and the UK has been going on for decades.

In 1982, Argentina tried to control the islands with military force, but was defeated in an armed conflict that lasted several weeks.

In 2013, a majority of the islanders voted to stay with the UK in a public referendum, but the Argentine government announced that the outcome of the referendum would not affect its desire to expand its sovereignty over the islands.
