US Secretary of State Expresses Concern Over Detention of Ousted President’s Family in Niger
Introduction
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has voiced his disapproval of Niger’s military leadership for refusing to release the family of ousted President Mohammed Bazum. Blinken expressed serious concern about their continued illegal detention and the deteriorating living conditions they are facing.
Blinken’s Conversation with Former Nigerian President
In a telephone conversation with former Nigerian President Mahamadu Issufu, with whom Bazum worked, Blinken conveyed his serious concern regarding the illegal detention and worsening conditions of President Bazum and his family. The US State Administration released a statement highlighting Blinken’s disappointment with the refusal of those in power to release the Bazum family as a goodwill gesture.
Ousted President and Family Held by Military
Since the military seized power in Niger on July 26, Mohammed Bazum and his family have been held captive. This has raised concerns from various parties regarding their wellbeing and treatment while in detention.
International Concerns
European Union High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell expressed his concern on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Bazum and his family have been deprived of food, electricity, and medical care for several days. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk also received reports indicating that the conditions of their detention may amount to degrading and inhuman treatment.
