Even if the most recent speculations say that Apple has abandoned its ambitions to implement solid-state buttons on iPhone 15 Pro models, it is still anticipated that the forthcoming devices will come equipped with a programmable "Action" button instead of the conventional Ring/Silent switch.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple-certified accessory manufacturers are now working with CADs that reveal that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature two mechanical volume buttons and an additional mechanical button to replace the Ring/Silent switch.
This button will be located on the side of the device. Users can assign the new button to system functions such as Ring/Silent, Flashlight, or Do Not Disturb, similar to how the "Action" button on the Apple Watch Ultra works.
While pressing a mechanical button causes it to move, pressing a solid-state button on an iPhone would cause the device's Taptic Engines to give the impression that the button is moving.
Apple analyst Jeff Pu believes the implementation of solid-state buttons has been delayed until the release of the iPhone 16 Pro in 2019 due to unnamed "design issues" that arose during the production of the iPhone 15 Pro.
