During a recent interview with MinnMax, the former Creative Director of Sledgehammer Games, Bret Robbins, disclosed that the company had been working on Advanced Warfare 2 before shifting its focus to Call of Duty: WWII.
Robbins responded to a query about how far the developers got with Advanced Warfare 2 by saying, “Yeah, we started down that path, we had some early prototypes, I believe we may have even done a demo level of it, and then it felt like World War 2 games had returned.”
Robbins explained that they changed course and moved on to World War 2, published in 2017.
Robbins also investigated the abandoned third-person Call of Duty game set in Vietnam, referred to internally as “Fog of War.” Robbins claimed that it was “almost like an Uncharted meets Call of Duty,” and that the game in question existed in both prototype and demo form.
It is still being determined where Sledgehammer Games’ creative direction will take the franchise after the release of their next premium title, which is scheduled for later this year. According to sources, Sledgehammer Games’ release for this year was supposed to be downloadable content (DLC) for Modern Warfare 2 for the following year. Still, it ended up being much more than that.
Call of Duty 2023 Key Dates
- Weekend 1 of the Beta for PS4 and PS5 will occur from October 6-10, 2023.
- The second beta weekend will occur from October 12 to October 16 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
- Early Access to the Campaign will begin on November 2, 2023, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
- Complete Launch (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC): November 10, 2023
