The Biden Administration Cancels Permits for Oil and Gas Development in Alaska’s Arctic Region

Introduction

The administration of US President Joe Biden has decided to cancel permits to develop oil and gas fields in the Arctic region located in Alaska, which were issued by former President Donald Trump at the end of his term.

Protecting the Arctic from Climate Crisis

President Biden has withdrawn permits to develop energy deposits in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, stating, “Because of the climate crisis, the temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast as the rest of the world, and we are responsible for it.” The decision aims to protect this priceless region.

Revoking Trump Administration Permits

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Debra Holan announced that seven permits issued by the Trump administration have been revoked after the Biden administration suspended them in 2021. This move comes as a measure to safeguard the Arctic region.

Restrictions on Oil and Gas Development

According to sources, President Biden intends to impose restrictions on the development and investment of oil and gas fields in the Arctic Ocean and Alaska. These restrictions will include banning oil and gas drilling on 1.2 million hectares of the Arctic Ocean and prohibiting the search for deposits in other areas within US territorial waters. Additionally, Biden will prohibit investment and development of oil and gas fields in Alaska covering an area of 5.3 million hectares.
