Historian Yuval Noah Harari said the world is on the threshold of a new religion created by artificial intelligence.
A scientist known for his best-selling book Sapiens said that software like ChatGPT can attract people by writing sacred texts.
Speaking at a science conference, he said that AI has broken new boundaries by “mastering” our language and can now use it to shape human culture.
Dr. Harari used the event to add his voice to growing calls for speedy regulation of a sector that experts warn is in the midst of a “dangerous” arms race.
He said: “In the future, we may see the first sects and religions in history whose texts were written by a non-human mind.”
Speaking at the Frontiers Forum event in Switzerland, he warned that machines now have tools that “make us plunge into a world of illusions like The Matrix, a nod to the 1999 sci-fi movie.
The Hollywood blockbuster depicts a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped in a simulated reality created by intelligent machines to distract people by using their bodies as a power source.
He said: “Contrary to what some conspiracy theories suggest, you don’t actually need to implant chips in people’s brains to control or manipulate them. For millennia, poets and politicians have used language and storytelling to manipulate and control people. and change society. Now from “Probably AI can do it. Calling for tougher regulations, he said: “We need to act quickly before AI gets out of our control.
