New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez Hires Attorney Abbe Lowell for Federal Bribery Case

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has chosen Abbe Lowell as his defense attorney in his federal bribery case, according to a spokesperson from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Abbe Lowell is already representing Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, in his tax and firearm charges. Lowell has a notable history of handling high-profile litigation, including Menendez’s previous corruption charges.

This is not the first time Menendez has hired Lowell. In 2015, when the senator was accused of accepting illegal gifts from a Florida ophthalmologist, Lowell represented him. The case was eventually dismissed due to a hung jury.

In 2022, Lowell successfully defended Matthew Grimes, an employee of Tom Barrack, a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, in a case where they were accused of acting as foreign agents for the United Arab Emirates.

Lowell has also provided legal representation to Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and former advisor. During Trump’s presidency, Lowell helped Kushner obtain permanent White House security clearance.

Neither Abbe Lowell nor Senator Menendez has responded to requests for comment.

On Friday, Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were indicted in Manhattan federal court on charges of using the senator’s political influence to benefit the Egyptian government in exchange for illegal gifts amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The charges against the senator and his wife include conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right. Three New Jersey businessmen allegedly involved in the bribery transactions have also been charged with the first two counts.

Menendez, his wife, and their co-defendants are scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday morning.
