Rafael Leao walked away with an injury at the start of his Milan side’s match against Lazio on Saturday in Italian league stage 34, four days before his side played the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Inter.

The 23-year-old Portugal international complained of pain in the upper right thigh after accelerating on the left flank.

Moments later, as a result of a discussion by Milan’s technical staff, Liao was replaced by Belgian Alexei Salmaekers in the 11th minute, perhaps as a precaution before the expected match date against Inter next Wednesday.

The Liao is Milan’s most powerful offensive weapon in the last two seasons, leading them to the Serie A title in 2022.

The Portuguese has also been decisive this season, as he was in the Champions League quarter-final against Napoli, which finally crowned the country as he played decisive goals back (1-0) and forward (1-1).
