Laughter Therapy: An Effective Way to Reduce Heart Disease Symptoms
Researchers at Porto Alegre Hospital in Brazil have discovered that laughter therapy can be a powerful tool in alleviating the symptoms of heart disease.
The Study
The study involved 26 patients, with an average age of 64, who had been diagnosed with coronary disease. The patients were divided into two groups. The first group was exposed to films and comedy programs for a duration of three months, while the second group watched serious documentaries during the same period.
The Results
The findings revealed that the first group experienced a 10% increase in the amount of oxygen their hearts could pump. They also showed improved vascular elasticity and decreased markers of inflammation, indicating a reduction in plaques within their blood vessels. This suggests that laughter therapy can effectively lower the risk of heart attack and stroke by reducing inflammation.
The Mechanism Behind the Benefits
Researchers believe that the release of endorphins during laughter plays a crucial role in the positive effects observed. Endorphins help reduce inflammation and promote relaxation of the heart and blood vessels. Additionally, laughter lowers the levels of stress hormones that can strain the heart.
Additional Benefits
Another study conducted at Changchun University of Traditional Chinese Medicine found that laughter therapy can also alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
