The Pentagon said about 400 Ukrainian troops in Germany have begun training to operate American M1 Abrams tanks.

The New York Times quoted Pentagon spokesman Garon Garn as saying that “about 200 Ukrainian soldiers have begun joint weapons exercises at the Gravenvehr range, and another 200 have begun tank refueling and maintenance training.”

Since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Western countries have provided Kiev with military assistance, with assistance including light and heavy weapons, including tanks, armored vehicles, missiles and drones.

Kyiv has been asking Western donors for several months to provide it with fighter jets. Last week, the White House approved the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by European allies.

For its part, Germany has said it will not send fighters to Kyiv, but will continue to support Ukraine in other ways.

The Kremlin has repeatedly warned against handing over Western weapons to Kyiv, emphasizing that supporting Ukraine with Western weapons does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations, but rather will have a negative impact.
