Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, said that the United States and Britain did not allow the Security Council to issue a statement condemning the military operation of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.
“We managed to prevent the condemnation of Israel with the help of the United States, with which we worked in cooperation,” Erdan added in an interview with Israeli Army Radio, noting that “the United States and the United Kingdom have made it clear that they will not allow any statement to be made.”
Ardan’s statement came after the 15-member Security Council held a closed meeting on Gaza at the request of the UAE, France and China.
At least 16 Palestinian civilians, including women and children, were killed during Israeli airstrikes.
Over the past two days, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad has fired more than 500 rockets at Israel. Erdan unsuccessfully pressed the Security Council to condemn the rocket attack from Gaza.
