Bulgaria’s prosecutor Ivan Gechev survived an “assassination attempt” today, Monday, by detonating an explosive device as his convoy passed, according to authorities.

Borislav Sarafov, assistant prosecutor, told reporters that “an assassination attempt was made on Gechev, and it was not just intimidation.”

“The bomb was made not only from TNT (about 3 kg), but also from fragments,” Sarafov said, adding: “It was an attack prepared by professionals, and it was clear that it was carried out very carefully.”

He stressed that Gechev and his family, who were traveling in armored cars, were spared by “an accidental coincidence.”

Authorities indicated that the prosecutor’s convoy was on its way to Sofia when a roadside bomb exploded at 11:30 (8:30 GMT).

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the attack, while the exact nature of the explosives is under investigation.

It is worth noting that the Attorney General, whose term will run until 2026, has been a controversial figure for many years, as Ashif has faced accusations of protecting people in power, as well as obstructing the disclosure of corruption and preventing convictions.
