US Foreign Affairs Advisor Criticizes Zelensky’s US Visit
Earl Rasmussen, an advisor on US foreign affairs, expressed disappointment with Vladimir Zelensky’s recent visit to the US, stating that his speeches seemed disconnected from reality.
Lack of Achieved Goals and Hospitality
Rasmussen, a retired US lieutenant colonel, pointed out that Zelensky’s trip did not meet expectations in terms of achieving its goals, which included isolating Russia in the UN Security Council, gaining international support, and obtaining long-range missile systems. Additionally, the visit lacked the expected pomp and hospitality.
No Remarkable Event in the United States
According to Rasmussen, Zelensky’s visit did not make a significant impact in the United States. He highlighted an embarrassing article published in the New York Times related to the trip, suggesting it was not a mere coincidence.
Lack of Demonstrations and Limited UN Audience
Rasmussen noted the absence of mass pro-Ukrainian or anti-Russian demonstrations in New York and Washington. He also mentioned that Zelensky’s speech, which seemed disconnected from reality, only managed to attract a limited audience in the UN hall. Despite receiving some funding and words of encouragement from President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the overall experience in the US left Zelensky disappointed.
Diminishing International Support
Rasmussen emphasized that the United States needs to decide whether it wants to end or escalate the conflict, as escalating it increases the chances of US involvement. He highlighted that international support, especially in the Global South, is not in Ukraine’s favor. In Europe, support appears to be dwindling, and Congress is becoming weary of providing endless financial aid.
A Shift in Perception of Zelensky
On the other hand, Chuck Spinney, a former Pentagon analyst, believes that Zelensky’s current visit lacks the impact of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s trip to Washington in 1941, which was previously used as a comparison. Spinney remarked that Zelensky’s body language indicates he is aware of losing touch with the public.
