Guterres called on all concerned to support this endeavour, pointing to a recently released United Nations Environment Program report that shows it is possible to reduce plastic pollution by 80 percent by 2040, provided that actions are taken now towards reuse and plastic recycling. .

He underlined the importance of governments, companies and consumers coming together to achieve the goal of making society free of plastic addiction, and to resolutely move towards the goal of zero waste production and building a circular economy. .

United Nations statistics show that around 400 million tons of plastic materials are produced worldwide every year, a third of which is used only once.
