Gabonese Government Imposes Curfew and Internet Suspension Ahead of Elections
The Gabonese government has recently implemented a curfew and suspended internet services, along with closing polling stations for upcoming presidential and legislative elections. The government’s main objective is to prevent the spread of violent calls and false news.
Reasons for the Measures
Gabon’s information minister, Rodrigue Mbomba-Bissau, explained that the internet suspension is necessary to avoid the dissemination of violent messages and false information. Additionally, a curfew has been imposed throughout the country, effective from Sunday, August 27, between 19:00 and 6:00.
Past Violent Incidents
The Gabonese government’s decision to take these measures may be influenced by previous violent incidents that occurred in 2016, following a disputed presidential election. During that time, riots erupted in the capital city of Libreville, resulting in three fatalities and numerous arrests.
Impact on Gabon
Bakume Interior Minister Mobilet Popia has reported that three individuals have already lost their lives, and approximately 1,100 people have been arrested in Gabon, a West African nation known for its significant oil production.
