Israeli Foreign Minister Opposes Saudi Arabia Opening Diplomatic Mission in Palestinian Authority

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen stated on Sunday that Israel will not permit the establishment of a Saudi Arabian diplomatic mission in the Palestinian Authority. According to Cohen, the decision was made without consulting Israel and is driven by the progress in normalization talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that allowing countries to open consulates contradicts Israel’s stance on the matter.

Israeli Focus on Peace Agreements and Disregard for Palestinian Issue

Cohen highlighted that the Palestinian issue is not the primary focus of discussion. He pointed out that previous peace agreements, such as the Abraham Accords, were successfully concluded under the leadership of Likud and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This demonstrates that the Palestinians do not hinder diplomatic progress and should not obstruct future agreements.

Saudi Arabia’s Unprecedented Move in Palestine

Recently, Saudi Arabia accredited Nayef bin Bandar Al Sudairi as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary from outside Palestine, as well as the consul general in Jerusalem. This move by Saudi Arabia is the first of its kind and signifies their intention to maintain a presence in Palestine while engaging in diplomatic relations.

Potential Deal Involving Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the Palestinian Issue

Reports from Western media suggest that the Biden administration is pushing for a significant deal with Saudi Arabia that may include normalizing relations with Israel. The Palestinian issue is reportedly part of the ongoing negotiations. However, Cohen asserts that the Palestinian matter will not hinder the progress of any agreement.
