On Saturday, the Israeli army admitted that two soldiers were killed in a “security incident” on the Egyptian border, while confirming that they had neutralized the “terrorist” who, according to Hebrew media, was an Egyptian policeman.
Although the circumstances of the incident are still unclear, Israeli army spokesman Avichai Adraei stated: “Two IDF soldiers were killed in a gunfight during a security incident on the border with Egypt that took place this morning.” a man and a woman soldier as a result of a shootout near the border. Cairo has not yet issued an official comment, but an Israeli army spokesman confirmed that the incident is being investigated in cooperation with the Egyptian army.
Israeli Army Radio, citing Egyptian sources, reported that Israeli warplanes had bombed targets in the Egyptian Sinai, while the Ynet website reported that “a major drug-smuggling operation, including a shootout, was disrupted in the area of the security incident a few hours ago.”
