Turkish Authorities Release Israeli Man Detained for Alleged Antiques Theft
Turkish authorities have recently released an Israeli man who was held in custody for over a month on suspicion of stealing antiques. The incident occurred when officials at Antalya airport discovered a decorative bell in the man’s bag and accused him of attempting to smuggle the antique out of Turkey.
In his defense, the man presented a receipt showing that he had purchased the item for $100 at a local market. He claimed that he believed the “bell” was mass-produced and not an antique of significant value.
To support his case, the man’s family provided CCTV footage of him buying the bell while on vacation with his wife and children. These efforts ultimately contributed to securing his release.
Although the man was permitted to return to Israel, he has been banned from reentering Turkey as part of the conditions of his release.
In response to the news, the man’s lawyer, Nir Yaslowitz, expressed relief and gratitude, stating, “I am glad that the mission is completed and my client is on his way to Israel.” Yaslowitz also thanked Israeli President Isaac Herzog and the Foreign Ministry for their assistance in securing the man’s release.
