Startling Rise in Online Harassment and Sexual Abuse of Minors in Israel

A report released by the Israeli Ministry of National Security revealed that more than 8,000 minors were harassed and sexually harassed online last year.

Reports confirmed that there were about 8,133 incidents during 2022 in which minors were harassed online and the two platforms that target minors the most are “Instagram” with 31% and “WhatsApp” with 26%, and that more than half of the identified perpetrators were minors between the ages of 13 and 16.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir noted that “the safety of children and youth online activities is more important than anything else.” In addition, according to the report, most of the victims are between the ages of 12 and 14, and among the attacks, 34% were cases of sexual harassment, and 21% were sexual photos and videos of victims posted online.

The report added that 73% of the victims were girls, and the most common form of assault on girls was sexual harassment (42%) and the publication of images of a sexual nature (25%). Other attacks include sexual extortion, sexting, indecent acts, and virtual rape.
