Taiwan Vice President Vows to Oppose Annexation in US Visit
Taiwan Vice President William Lai made a strong statement during his visit to the United States, expressing his opposition to the island’s annexation. This has drawn criticism from China, which considers Taiwan as part of its territory.
Presidential Election Front-Runner
Lai, who is seen as the front-runner in next year’s Taiwan presidential election, made a stop in the United States before heading to Paraguay. He will be attending the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Santiago Peña.
Angering Beijing
Lai’s visit has angered Beijing, as they accuse him of “promoting separatist ideas.” China strongly opposes any attempts to challenge its territorial claims over Taiwan.
Commitment to Resisting Annexation
During a dinner in New York, Lai emphasized his commitment to resisting annexation and protecting Taiwan’s sovereignty. He stated that he will continue to oppose Taiwan joining mainland China.
China’s Response
China has closely monitored Lai’s visits and warned of taking firm and decisive action to protect its national sovereignty. In recent years, China has increased its political and military pressure on Taiwan through frequent military activities around the island.
US Military Aid and One China Principle
US President Joe Biden recently announced $345 million in military aid to Taiwan, further complicating the tense relationship between the US and China. Beijing has urged Washington to abide by the One China principle, which considers Taiwan as an integral part of China.
