Washington, March 21 – The Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US House of Representatives, Michael McCaul, demanded that the US Secretary of State provide documents on the “catastrophic withdrawal” of US forces from Afghanistan by March 23.
“On March 3rd… I wrote to you regarding the State Department’s continued refusal to cooperate with the committee that requested documents and data in connection with the catastrophic withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. In this regard, it is essential that you submit each information request before the March 23rd due before Committee,” McCaul said in a letter to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. In the event of non-compliance with the requirements, McCall wrote, “the Commission will require that they be provided by subpoena.” Blinken will answer lawmakers’ questions about US foreign policy on Thursday, March 23, according to the committee’s website. The hearings are titled “The State of American Diplomacy in 2023 – Growing Conflicts, Budgetary Problems, and Great Power Competition.”

As McCaul recalled in the letter, the committee is requesting documents from the State Department related to the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan as of August 2021, but the requests have not been fully met. In January of this year, after the work of Congress with the new composition began, McCall sent a new request to the Secretary of State, which did not fully satisfy him.
“In the 18 months since the fall of Kabul, many questions about the troop withdrawal have remained unanswered. The commission has an obligation to investigate how these major mistakes were made and to determine what actions, including possible legislative action, are necessary in order for such situations not to recur. In the future “.
In early August 2021, the Taliban* intensified their offensive against the Afghan government forces, entering Kabul on August 15, and the next day declaring the war over. In the last two weeks of August, from the Kabul airport, which was under the protection of the US military, there was a mass evacuation of citizens of Western countries and Afghans who cooperated with them. On the night of August 31, the US military left Kabul Airport, ending nearly 20 years of the US military presence in Afghanistan.
