Regional Summit in Cairo Highlights the Importance of Neighboring Countries’ Involvement in Solving Sudan Crisis

Introduction

Political scientist Ramadan Carney emphasized the significance of the Sudan Neighborhood Summit held in Cairo. He stated that it is crucial for the neighboring countries to actively participate in finding solutions to the Sudanese crisis due to the potential consequences it may have on those countries.

Regional Mobilization to Counter Sudanese Crisis

An expert on African affairs, in an exclusive interview with RT, highlighted that there has been a regional mobilization of countries to address the repercussions of the Sudanese crisis. These countries aim to establish a coordinated stance on the proposed regional and international solutions. To achieve this, a summit was organized in Cairo, with the participation of the Heads of State and Government of the African Republic Al Wasati, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Libya, and South Sudan. The Chairman of the African Union Commission and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States were also present.

Message for the Regional and International Environment

Carney emphasized that the speeches delivered by the heads of state during the summit, as well as its closing statement, conveyed several important messages. Firstly, it highlighted the necessity for the seven neighboring countries of Sudan to actively contribute to the proposed solutions in order to overcome the crisis. The summit emphasized the implications and burdens that this crisis places on these countries, particularly in terms of humanitarian and relief efforts.

Rejecting External Intervention

The summit also reached a consensus on various issues, most notably the rejection of external intervention in the crisis. The participating countries aligned with the Egyptian and Sudanese vision, considering the current conflict as an internal matter. Additionally, they emphasized the need for an inclusive political dialogue among Sudanese parties to initiate a comprehensive political process within Sudan.

Considering the Role of International Powers

The summit acknowledged the role of international powers in resolving the crisis and emphasized the importance of coordination with other negotiation tracks, such as the Jeddah track and the IGAD track. Furthermore, the participating countries opposed the idea of deploying international forces to Sudan and firmly rejected foreign military and humanitarian interventions.

Establishment of a Ministerial Mechanism

The summit proposed the creation of a regular ministerial mechanism to address the crisis. The first meeting of this mechanism is planned to take place in Chad, with the aim of developing an executive action plan to end hostilities and achieve a comprehensive solution for the Sudanese crisis.

Gaining Support from International Organizations

A central focus of the summit was to seek support from international organizations and bodies, particularly humanitarian and aid agencies. The participating countries called for coordination with these organizations to facilitate the safe delivery of aid to the most vulnerable areas in Sudan and mitigate the economic impact of the crisis.

“Cairo Track” as a Potential Solution

Based on the positive response from the Sudanese army, Rapid Support Forces, and numerous international and regional actors, it is likely that the “Cairo track” will become the primary approach proposed to resolve the Sudanese crisis. This is due to the complex nature of the conflict and the overlapping factors contributing to it.
